Francois

Francois Lachance has popped in and out of commentary among my many reads - I'm wondering where else he's going...

But just a note of delight as he weaves and points in one place to entries elsewhere.

Linking me to Chuck, and Chuck to Jason

or

Me to Jill to Janet.

it conjures an image of beauty as a virtual blogosphere seamstress weaving her way throughout the ether, bringing everyone together.

i would venture a guess that Francois would not appreciate the simile, however, since i could not think of a masculine version as lovely.

Why not?

I like the metaphor of a blog DJ (Francois used a similar metaphor to a different purpose on my blog), cutting, splicing, and sampling a group of diverse blogs, making his "own" blog within the comments and trackbacks where we find him.

Liz - good question, and it seems more a therapy issue than a topic for commenting. i'll have to process it some more, though it could be too that i was just lazy. =P

And i especially love the DJ metaphor, Chuck, being a DJ myself and appreciating the recognition that DJs do in fact create something animate from the inanimate.

How could I resist offering one possible reply to Elouise's query as to where I might be going with a little hint to where I have been?

See Crooked Timber comment on the close reading of a blog entry by Brian Weatherson entitle "Style Police"
http://www.crookedtimber.org/archives/000577.html

And in the spirit of close reading...
Liz's "why not?" is lovely in its dual appeal: why couldn't Jay think of another simile, why would Francois not appreciate the simile?

Close reading is an exercise in appreciative translation. To stress the seam of Jay's extended simile: [it] the personfication of [beauty] -- the lower case democratic version of the quotidian ideal -- [as a virtual]* [blogosphere seamstress weaving her] tipsy [way] to the doors of spinners [throughout the ether bringing] every one an [everyone] [together].

If imagining Gertrude Stein as the mother of all animators doing a rewrite on Jay's prose to come up with that mind bending "every one an everyone together" is simple, then gender bending is a cinch. :)

Thanks Elouise for hosting a sharable stage. I feel appreciated for being appreciative.

* Virtual understood in the sense that "the virtual is the translation between the translated (source) and the translating (target)" (See http://www.chass.utoronto.ca/~lachance/ivt.htm)

If a little knowledge is dangerous, where is a man who has so much as to be out of danger?

Metaphysics is the finding of bad reasons for what we believe upon instinct, but to find these reasons is no less an instinct.
