(a) plenty of gumption
(b) a really good bunch of folks behind them to prop them up, hold their hand and cheer them on

(c) relentless devils.

History of the World I am pretty sure no one has ever conquered the world.
But then I am only up to the consolidation of the European nations from the feudal stew.
