Zolli bothered me. He was so glib and managed to hide quite a lot by citing a relatively little known German philosopher/psychiatrist name Karl Jasper. Jasper pointed to periods of change in history and the period from 800-200 BC which he said turned on an historical axis of the year 500 BC. Jasper noted that this period corresponds to the emergence of most of the worlds major religions and systems of thought (Socrates, Buddhism, and Confucianism, for example). That this period marks the formation of much of what became the world as we know it today isn't news but this was the culmination of some very sad transitions in the human condition that continue to this day. For example, humanity started the transition from human-scale groups (small villages) to cities, from rural to urban living, from peaceful groupings to feudalism, from nourished to malnourished. That characterizes the majority of humans alive today, something we shouldn't forget.

If a little knowledge is dangerous, where is a man who has so much as to be out of danger?

Metaphysics is the finding of bad reasons for what we believe upon instinct, but to find these reasons is no less an instinct.
