I guess the main thing is this...
We have the capability of making people look where we want, do what we want, push and pull them here and there - in our roles as parents, as teachers, as information technologists, as designers...
We kid (my family does), "If only we could use our powers for good..."
The thing is, we can. The moment we decide not to pop someone when we REALLY want to; when we do the right thing instead of the hurtful thing; when we think about someone else more than ourselves - we are doing a little bit toward a more general peace. It may be extemely local, but that does count.
Scott Hunt's presentation really did strike a chord.
The New Media capstone project will bring in different non-profit organizations in need of websites, publications and materials. The students will work with them. It's not passive. It's a positive thing.
There's more - no doubt - but it's there to burble in my subconscious, perhaps a little closer to the surface now that it's been articulated.
I wondered (still do) about what is the motivation for me? What is my particular goal in life? The sort of general vibe I've been shooting for has been to leave places better for my having been there. It's obtuse, I know. Like at the end of a two hour lecture, hopefully the students have gotten something they didn't have when it began. One thing would be enough. That'd still be nudging me in the positive direction.
Using my powers for good.
hrmm
That's a bit harder than beaming a good parking space.
Life is suffering.
But you can't not try.
If a little knowledge is dangerous, where is a man who has so much as to be out of danger?
