tempest in a teapot

I have been using Moveable Type, not only for this blog, but for all of the Oyzons as well as for courses I teach. 12 blogs altogether so far. Liz posted this bit yesterday about a new pricing scheme for MT 3.0.

Minor panic ensued. The new pricing fees include notions of how many blogs one has!

Eek.

More reading today.

If I'm using Movable Type 2.661 or lower, do I have to suddenly pay now for my current version or follow the weblog/author limits for my copy?

No. For anyone who is complying with the license of 2.661 or below, there is no requirement to upgrade to 3.0 or any future version of Movable Type. The license which was in effect when you downloaded your version of Movable Type is the one that applies to your copy.

The upshot? Since I'm running an older version - the old fee schedule (read that as FREE) still applies. Panic abated.

Still, I'm investigating other blog applications. There are quite a few that are free. And none of the blogs are a paying endeavor. I am - and because I am, the whole family is - vested in this tool. MT is perfectly within their rights to charge for their work. It's appropriate. I just can't afford the upgrade...at least not today. And it looks like I don't have to at this very moment. Will I pay for the upgrade? - if I could come up with $150.00 of disposable cash, sure. (A brief note about price point...if it was 70 bucks for the multiple blogs version, it'd feel like a no brainer. Still couldn't afford it today, but more within the realm of feeling like I got a good deal.)

In the meantime... Classes are over. Grading continues, but that too is finite.

Yesterday was balmy and we went out for our first summer ice cream cones.

Tried WordPress - but that is for multiple authors, single blog. I'd have to do multiple installs.

Next up is b2Evolution, which looks promising. They're working on an MT import.

This'll be a nice summer project (no sarcasm)... Test driving aps and forced CSS wrangling.

They added that language after I talked with Anil last night, and explained to him that it was not clear whether this was retroactive.

If you head over *fast* to pMachine.com, they're doing a "switch free" campaign to ExpressionEngine for the first 1000 MT users to contact them. It looks really intriguing.

Done!

Looks good. My webhost provider has pMachine free available as one of its offered aps...ExpressionEngine is a different beast. Looks pretty fabulous.

Hopefully I got in with the first 1000 :)

Thanks, hon.

You like the product, correct? You have friends and family who benefit from your liking (and installing) the product, correct? You have time before you need to upgrade, correct? You are renowed for tracking weekly progress on a variety of fronts, correct?

So over the course of X weeks X amount of money gets raised and any surplus can go the outfit of your choice. Sometimes the solutions are social and not technical. Divide 150 by 10 or even by 20 and you will begin to realize the power not of microcredit but microtransfers. Your call.

The reason I used MT from the git go was basically because that was what Liz was using, and as an introduction suited my needs.

When I switched hosting providers and saw various blog aps available, I looked at 1 of them and it was uncomfortably different, shrugged, and stuck with the known.

The product is to my liking. Have I really investigated any other products? No. ExpressionEnginge may be a Ferrari, MT may be an SUV...or it may be just what I need. (WordPress looks to be a two-seater. Zippy, but too small for my family).

Haven't thought about it until now. It's worth the consideration.

You went out for ice cream?
Did you go to Keith's Custard by the airport?
I miss that place. The best Split-in-a-cup anywhere!!!

Posted by: benny at May 17, 2004 11:06 AM

Alas, Keith's is no more. We went to Russell's...it's on the way to Tinseltown, with the inexplicable logo of a T-Rex with ice cream cone in its stubby hand.

BTW, I miss you,
