Chat AV, chat_av

ENTRY # 71 I’ve been playing with iChat AV. Way cool, and I suspect one of those transforming evolutionary steps. chatAV.jpg Still, not something for use all of the time. Example, if the daily barometer is in the feel-like-shit-anti-sociable sector, it ain’t happening. (This screen grab is the just-rolled-out-of-bed-Weez…Not great, but more importantly, not awful. Moral: good camera set up and lighting go a long way to ameliorate bed head and a puffy face). Also, there are some people I feel no need to see, some people who are better not seen, and some who just give great text. There could be that hybrid of watching someones facial expression through the video, while the content still resides firmly in typeWorld. I havent done it yet, but quite plausible. Itll be interesting to see if video sign language communication with my deaf friends will trump text messaging. Resolution and frame rate become more crucial here. The size of the window is decent. Because the camera isnt set in the middle of the screen where the dialogees head is, the conversation happens off-axis. That evokes some level of cognitive dissonance, because in realWorld, continued looking away connotes disinterest, perhaps a greater interest in something else (say some other chick) or a signal that the topic is closed. So rude. Ive got a miniDV camcorder hooked up to the laptop. Its doing a good job, good lens and deals with the low light situation better than the iSight. The iSight is a sexy little component, is much more compact, and does a decent job – but Ive already got the camcorder. Compare zero out of pocket and 150 bucks. There is no comparison. The iSight goes back to Steve, and Im saved from having one more bit of techno effluvia in the house. If I did have that kind of pocket change, Id drop it in a heartbeat…but alas, milk and eggs take precedence.

BTW, you hardly look any thing close to how most just-rolled-out-of-bed folks do. This is a good thing. Remember my hair in the morning?
